At a glance

The most important Google Business Profile optimization levers: fill in all profile fields completely, upload at least 20 high-quality photos, respond to every review, and publish a weekly post. Consistent execution of these four points usually leads to visibly better rankings in local searches within 4 to 8 weeks.

Your Google Business Profile is your most important free marketing tool. If you use it properly, you appear right at the top of local searches. If you ignore it, you lose potential customers to the competition every day.

In this guide I show you step by step how to optimize your profile so Google favors you, and customers call or visit you directly.

What is Google Business and why is it so important?

Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the tool that controls your entry in Google Maps and local search. When someone searches for "hairdresser in Stuttgart" or "dentist Ludwigsburg", the results appear in the so-called Local 3-Pack, the three businesses Google considers most relevant for that search.

There is gold in these 3 spots: a large share of clicks goes to the top three entries. Position 4 and below don't exist for most users.

The 7 most important optimization measures

1. Completeness: fill in every field

Google prefers complete profiles. Fill in all available fields:

  • Business name: exactly as on your letterhead, don't smuggle in keywords
  • Primary category: the most important ranking signal, choose carefully
  • Secondary categories: up to 9 additional categories possible
  • Description: 750 characters, incorporate natural keywords
  • Opening hours: including holidays and special times
  • Phone, website, address: consistent with all other online entries
  • Attributes: Wi-Fi, accessible, parking etc.: check everything that applies

2. Photos: quality beats quantity

Photos bring your profile to life and build trust. That doesn't mean you should upload as many random photos as possible. It's about relevant, high-quality images.

  • Exterior view of your business (recognizable from the street)
  • Interior view: authentic, no stock material
  • Team photos: people trust people
  • Products and services in action
  • Good-quality logo as profile picture

3. Reviews: collect them systematically

Reviews are the strongest trust signal and a direct ranking factor. But most satisfied customers don't leave a review, they need a friendly reminder.

Create a direct review link. You can find it in your profile under “Get more reviews”. Pass it on after every job, in person, via QR code or card. Via WhatsApp or SMS only if the customer has given consent beforehand.
  • Reply to all reviews: positive and negative
  • For negative reviews: respond factually and solution-oriented
  • Never buy fake reviews: that leads to a ban

4. Google Posts: post regularly

Very few businesses use Google Posts, yet they're a simple ranking lever. Post at least 1–2x a week:

  • Current offers and promotions
  • New products or services
  • Events
  • Tips and knowledge from your industry

5. List products and services

Many businesses forget this section entirely. Enter every single service with description and (if possible) price. This gives Google more context for which searches you're relevant.

6. Put frequently asked questions on your website and in posts

Google switched off the “Questions and answers” section in the profile in 2025. Your customers' questions still matter: answer the most common ones on your website, for example in an FAQ section, and pick them up in your Google posts.

7. Consistency across all directories (NAP)

NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone, your contact data. These must be exactly identical on your website, in Google Business and in all other industry directories (Yelp, Bing, Yellow Pages). Even small deviations like "St." vs. "Street" can negatively impact your ranking.

How long until I see results?

Google Business reacts faster than classic SEO. First ranking improvements are often visible within 2 to 4 weeks. Until a fully optimised profile shows up in the Local 3-Pack for relevant searches, it usually takes a few weeks to a few months.

Conclusion

Google Business optimization is the most effective and cheapest way to win more local customers. The tool is free, the impact is measurable, and most of your competitors only use it half-heartedly.
