AI search engines like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity prefer to cite websites with clear structure, concrete facts and structured data (Schema.org). To get found by AI, you need detailed Q&A sections, FAQ schema, clear pricing and service information, and a llms.txt entry.
The way people search on the internet is undergoing a fundamental shift. More and more users are asking their questions not at Google, but at ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Perplexity or Microsoft Copilot. Instead of a list of links, they get a direct, fully-formed answer. This has massive implications for your visibility as a business.
Welcome to the world of GEO: Generative Engine Optimization. In this article you'll learn what GEO is, how AI search engines work, and what you can concretely do so your business appears in answers from ChatGPT and friends.
What is GEO and why does it matter?
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization: optimizing your online presence for AI-powered search engines and assistants. While classic SEO aims to rank high in Google's list of links, GEO is about being cited as a source in the generated answers of AI systems.
The difference is fundamental:
- Classic SEO: User searches "dentist Ludwigsburg" → Google shows 10 blue links → user clicks
- GEO/AI-SEO: User asks ChatGPT "Which dentist in Ludwigsburg can you recommend?" → AI names specific practices → no click needed
Google itself now also answers with AI: in Germany, Google has shown AI Overviews since 26 March 2025 and AI Mode since September 2025. Both summarise answers and link to the sources. What helps you there: good content, clear answers to real questions and a well-maintained Google profile.
How do AI search engines decide who to mention?
AI models like ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity generate their answers based on various sources:
1. Training data
The models were trained on huge amounts of web data. If your business is mentioned on many trustworthy websites, in directories and news articles, it has a higher chance of appearing in the training material.
2. Real-time web search
Many AI assistants (ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Google Gemini) search the web in real time to find current information. They use similar signals to classic search engines, but prefer content that is clearly structured, factual and quotable.
3. Structured data
Schema.org markup, Google Business Profile data and other structured information help AI systems classify your business correctly. The better structured your data, the more likely you'll appear in AI answers.
10 concrete GEO strategies for local businesses
Strategy 1: Build authority and mentions
AI models trust sources that are mentioned frequently and consistently across the web. The more often your business name appears alongside your service and location, the more likely you'll be named in AI answers.
- Entries in all relevant industry directories (Yellow Pages, Yelp, Bing Places, industry-specific portals)
- Press releases and mentions in local media
- Guest posts on relevant specialist portals
- Active social media profiles with consistent business information
Strategy 2: Answer questions directly
AI assistants are trained to answer questions. Create content that directly and clearly answers frequently asked questions. Use question headings (H2, H3) and provide the answer in the first paragraph below.
Example: Instead of a heading like "Our services" write "What does a website for tradespeople cost?" and answer the question directly in the next paragraph. Exactly such content is picked up by AI systems as a source.
Strategy 3: Use Schema.org markup intensively
Structured data is even more important for GEO than for classic SEO. Implement:
- LocalBusiness or more specific types (Restaurant, Dentist, Plumber, etc.)
- FAQPage for FAQ sections
- HowTo for guides and step-by-step content
- Review and AggregateRating for reviews
- Service for individual services with prices and descriptions
Good to know: there is hardly any special display in Google Search for this anymore. Google has not shown HowTo since 2023, FAQ only to a limited extent, and businesses' own reviews not at all. The data still helps Google understand your content.
Strategy 4: Demonstrate E-E-A-T
Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness, these criteria are just as important for AI systems as for Google. Show your expertise:
- Name qualifications, certifications and years of experience
- Show real customer reviews and case studies
- Link to authoritative sources and get linked by others
- Publish under your real name with author box and biography
Strategy 5: Google Business Profile as AI data source
Your Google Business Profile is one of the most important data sources for AI systems, especially Google Gemini accesses it directly. Optimize it to the max:
- Fully filled-in profile with all services and products
- Regular Google Posts with relevant keywords
- Many and current reviews
Strategy 6: Optimize content for natural language
People speak with AI assistants differently than they type into Google. Instead of "hairdresser Stuttgart cheap" they ask "Which cheap hairdresser in Stuttgart can you recommend?" Optimize your content for this natural, conversational language.
Strategy 7: Create comparisons and lists
AI systems love structured content. Create lists, comparisons and rankings that can serve as sources for AI-generated answers:
- "The 5 best tips for …": lists with concrete recommendations
- Comparison tables (pros and cons of different options)
- Step-by-step guides
- Definition texts: "What is …?" and "How does … work?"
Strategy 8: Enrich local content with facts
AI systems prefer content with concrete facts, numbers and data. Instead of "We have lots of experience" write something like "Master craftsman business in Ludwigsburg since 2009, more than 300 bathrooms renovated." Concrete data is more citable than vague statements.
Strategy 9: Presence on AI-friendly platforms
Certain platforms are preferred sources for AI systems:
- Wikipedia (for larger businesses, mind the notability criteria)
- Reddit: discussions and recommendations are frequently used as sources
- Specialist forums and Q&A platforms: show industry-specific expertise
- YouTube: video content is increasingly indexed by AI
Strategy 10: Monitor and adjust
Regularly test how AI assistants present your business. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity about your industry in your city and check:
- Are you mentioned? If so, with what information?
- Is the information correct?
- Which competitors are named instead?
- Which sources are cited?
GEO and classic SEO: not either-or
GEO doesn't replace classic SEO, it complements it. The good news: many GEO measures simultaneously strengthen your classic SEO. Quality content, structured data, strong directory entries and E-E-A-T signals help you both at Google and at AI search engines.
Businesses that invest in GEO now gain a massive head start, because most competitors don't have this topic on their radar yet. In a few years, GEO will probably be as standard as SEO is today.
Conclusion: The future of search has begun
AI search engines change the rules of the game. Whoever optimizes their online presence for ChatGPT, Gemini and friends now secures visibility in a rapidly growing channel. The fundamentals stay the same: quality content, strong reputation and structured data. But execution requires new strategies.
