DIY SEO: what you can do for free as a beginner

Stefanos Svarnas · 11 min read

At a glance

As a beginner you can do the following for free: set up Google Search Console, enrich existing texts with relevant keywords, set descriptive URLs and meta descriptions, build internal links, and write alt texts for images. These five steps lift most websites visibly already.

SEO sounds like rocket science: but it isn't. At least not the basics. In this article I'll show you which SEO measures you can implement as a beginner completely for free, which tools you need and where the line is beyond which professional help makes sense.

What actually is SEO?

SEO stands for "Search Engine Optimization". Goal: build and optimise your site so Google shows it as high as possible for relevant searches. Without paying for ads.

SEO splits roughly into three areas:

  • On-page SEO: everything happening on your site (text, headings, images, technical)
  • Off-page SEO: everything happening outside (links from other sites, mentions, directory entries)
  • Technical SEO: load time, mobile optimisation, site structure, schema markup

As a beginner focus on on-page SEO, you can do that completely yourself and for free.

The 3 free Google tools you should set up immediately

1. Google Search Console

Search Console is your free SEO dashboard directly from Google. It shows you:

  • Which search terms your site appears for
  • How often people click your result
  • Whether there are technical issues (crawl errors, mobile problems)
  • Which pages are indexed and which aren't

How to set it up: go to search.google.com/search-console, sign in with your Google account and verify your domain. Easiest via a DNS record or an HTML file uploaded to your server.

2. Google Analytics 4

Google Analytics shows how many visitors come to your site, where they come from and what they do. To start, these questions are enough:

  • How many visitors per week/month?
  • Through which channels (Google, social, direct)?
  • Which pages are most visited?
  • How long do visitors stay on average?
Important: remember to set up a cookie consent banner before activating Google Analytics. In Germany it's mandatory (GDPR). Without consent you may not collect tracking data.

3. Google Business Profile

For local businesses, the Google Business Profile is almost more important than the website itself. It's free and gives you visibility in Google Maps and local search. How to set it up is explained in my Google Business setup guide.

On-page SEO: the 8 most important measures

1. Optimise title tags

The title tag is the blue headline appearing in Google search results. It's one of the most important ranking factors.

  • Length: 50–60 characters (Google cuts off after that)
  • Keyword at the start: place your main keyword as early as possible
  • Unique: every page needs its own title tag
  • Example: instead of "Home | Müller Plumbing" better: "Plumbing & Heating Ludwigsburg | Müller, Fast & Fair"

2. Write meta descriptions

The meta description is the short text under the title tag in search results. It doesn't influence ranking directly, but the click-through rate, and that matters.

  • Length: 140–155 characters
  • Call to action: tell the reader what's on the page and why to click
  • Example: "Pipe burst in Ludwigsburg? We're with you in 30 min. Fair prices, 24h emergency. Call now!"

3. Heading structure (H1–H3)

Every page should have exactly one H1 (the main heading). Under it H2 for the main sections and H3 for sub-sections. Like a table of contents.

  • H1: "Plumbing & Heating in Ludwigsburg" (once per page)
  • H2: "Our services", "About us", "Contact"
  • H3: "Bathroom renovation", "Drain cleaning", "Heating installation"

4. Alt text for images

Google can't "see" images: it reads the alt text. Every image on your site should have a descriptive alt text:

  • Bad: alt="image1" or alt="" (empty)
  • Good: alt="Finished bathroom renovation with walk-in shower in Ludwigsburg"
  • Overdone: alt="plumbing Ludwigsburg best bath renovation cheap top quality" (keyword stuffing)

5. Internal linking

Link your own pages sensibly. If you mention "bathroom renovation" on a service page, link to the detail page. It helps Google understand your structure and keeps visitors longer.

Rule of thumb: every important page should be internally linked from at least 2–3 other pages. And every page should contain at least 2–3 internal links.

6. Write content that really helps

Google gets better at distinguishing helpful content from shallow SEO blabla. Write texts with real value:

  • Answer the questions your customers actually ask
  • Be specific: instead of "we offer good service" better "we're on site in 30 minutes and give you a fixed price upfront"
  • Write at least 300–500 words per page (for key pages 800+ is welcome)
  • Update your content regularly

7. Keep URL structure clean

Your URLs should be short, descriptive and readable:

  • Bad: yourdomain.com/page?id=247&cat=3
  • Good: yourdomain.com/bathroom-renovation-ludwigsburg
  • Use hyphens instead of underscores
  • No umlauts in URLs (ue instead of ü, ae instead of ä)

8. Improve load time

Faster pages rank better. Things you can do for free:

  • Compress images: use free tools like TinyPNG or Squoosh. A photo shouldn't exceed 200–300 KB
  • Few external scripts: every embedded tool (chat widgets, social buttons) slows your page
  • Test: check load time free with Google PageSpeed Insights (pagespeed.web.dev)

Local SEO: especially important for small businesses

If you have a local shop, these extra measures are worth gold:

  • NAP consistency: name, address, phone must be identical everywhere online (site, Google Business, directories)
  • Local keywords: mention your city and region naturally in your text (e.g. "Plumbing in Ludwigsburg and surroundings")
  • Business directories: register free in directories like Gelbe Seiten, Das Örtliche, Yelp and GoLocal
  • Collect reviews: Google reviews are a strong local ranking signal

Free SEO tools you should know

  • Google Search Console: a must: shows how Google sees your page
  • Google Analytics 4: visitor stats and behaviour analysis
  • Google PageSpeed Insights: load-time analysis with concrete improvement tips
  • Ubersuggest (Free): keyword research and competitor analysis (limited daily queries)
  • AnswerThePublic: shows the questions people ask on your topic
  • Yoast SEO (WordPress plugin): if you use WordPress, this free plugin helps with on-page optimisation
  • Screaming Frog SEO Spider (Free): crawls up to 500 URLs and finds technical SEO problems

What NOT to do as a beginner

  • Keyword stuffing: repeating keywords unnaturally. Google notices and penalises
  • Buying links: hands off cheap "100 backlinks for 20 euros" offers. Hurts more than helps
  • Copying content: taking text from other sites is an SEO killer (and legally problematic)
  • Too many fronts at once: focus on basics before advanced techniques
  • Impatience: SEO needs time. Don't expect results within days: plan for 3–6 months for visible improvements

Your SEO roadmap: the first 30 days

If you start today, I recommend this order:

  • Week 1: set up Search Console and Analytics. Create or update your Google Business Profile
  • Week 2: review and optimise title tags and meta descriptions on all pages. Add alt text to all images
  • Week 3: check heading structure (H1, H2, H3). Improve internal linking. Compress images
  • Week 4: create a detailed blog article or FAQ section answering a common customer question. List in 2–3 directories

When is professional SEO help worth it?

The basics above you can definitely do yourself. But there are points where DIY hits its limits:

  • You face strong competition for lucrative keywords
  • Your site has technical issues you can't solve
  • You need a thought-through content strategy with keyword research
  • You want schema markup, Core Web Vitals or link building done professionally
  • You notice that despite optimising you're not making progress

In these cases, professional SEO advice can make the difference. If you're unsure where you stand, feel free to get in touch for a no-obligation chat. Then we'll look together at what you can do yourself and where support would make sense.
